Mail merge from public folders

Hi

I need to use contacts and distributionlists residing in public folders as
the source, when I do mail merge in MS Word 2003.

When I use Office 2003 Pro (Danish) I receive an error message in Danish
saying "Der kan ikke hentes en liste med tabeller fra datakilden" which could
be translated into "A list of tables could not be retrieved from the data
source".

If I use Office XP Pro sp2 (Danish) I'm allowed to merge from the contacts
residing under the mailbox, but when I try to merge from a public folder I
receive an error message in Danish saying "Funktionen kunne ikke udføres på
grund af en fejl i en dialogboks eller et database program" which could be
translated into "The Operation Could Not Be Completed Because of Dialog or
Database Engine Failure". This error is reported by microsoft in the
following article : http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320838 . The solution
is apparently to do do the mail merge from Outlook, but in that case I'm not
allowed to merge with distributionlists :

So...if I do the mail merge from Outlook 2003 (which is not the preferred
solution), I'm warned that the public folder is containing a distribution
list, which will not be used (with a "do display again" checkbox).

I'm running Windows XP Pro sp2 (Danish language) and Exchange Server 2000.
Can anybody help me with a solution ?

It is not a security problem, since I am able to view the public folder with
contacts from Outlook. I have also verified that Outlook is set as the
default Mail program (also in internet Explorer)

Hi Joachim,

You may also want to post this in the Word Mailmerge
discussion group (link below) and include the
format/data type of your distribution lists

I also asked IBM to take a look at the problem, and this is the answer that
they gave me...

"After researching the issue I have found that this is a known issue and
is documented in the following knowledge base article (below). I know
that the article relates to Office 2002, but I have checked and it also
applies to Office 2003. It appears that there is a limitation in Word
which causes this issue, and using Outlook to initiate the merge may be
the only workaround.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=322215

The article points to a couple of workarounds/fixes that I would like
you to try. The first is to make sure that you have the very latest
Microsoft Data Access Component installed on the affected machine. This
can be downloaded from this location
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6c050fe3-c795-4
b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en . After this you should run a
detect and repair on Office. Please note that you will need your Office
CD to do this.

The second is to use the mail merge helper rather than the mail merge
wizard to carry out the mail merge.

I know that you have already seen the article that suggests that you
initiate the merge from Outlook rather than Word and that this causes
further complications. The message states that you cannot include
distribution lists in a mail merge. This is by design and is documented
in Outlook's 'Help'."

That's it :-|
