mail merge from web app through excel

In an asp2.0 application, I need to create an excel spreadsheet that will be
used a a basis for mail merging letters. I have downloaded the oxppia file
and registered the excel libraries.
I am looking for some documentation on how to accomplish this task. I have
reviewed the Q220607 document, but not sure how to translate this to excel.
I need to use this process since we are not using the sql server reporting
services.

Is there any reason this has to be an Excel sheet? Word can mail merge just as
easily (or even better) to an html file containing (just) a HTML table.
