mail merge in protected document

can i have mail merge fields in a document if it is
locked? note that the section in which the merge fields
are located is not locked.
if it is not possible is there any way i can get around
the issue?

Locked as in protected as a form?

No, the two features aren't really compatible. You can't
merge without removing document protection; and removing
document protection will tend to lose the text form fields.

Hi Mariatherp,

You should post a new message, and not piggy-back on someone else's.
This way, more people might see and read your message.

You need to use a VBA macro, probably not a very complicated one. But
without knowing which version of Word is involved, that's all one can
say.
I'm trying to figure out how to automatically lock the docs upon
creation of the merge letters. This way the user can select options
from dropdowns after they merge the letters. Any ideas?
