Mail merge into form protected document

Here is what I want to accomplish.

Using a form protected document in Word (using dropdown selection fields and
check box fields and fill in fields currently) I need to create separate
pages, one for each student, for a group of students with their names,
course numbers, etc merged into them. I have no issue creating the merge in
an unprotected document or creating the protected document, just can't
combine the two for the desired results. I need to be able to keep the
dropdown selections and check boxes once the merge has been completed for
each page which will have a separate student name on it.

My data source is usually a Word table with the pertinent information in the
various fields but could use Excel as the data source. Do not have Access.

I would be using either Word 2003 or 2007 as both are installed on the
machine I will use to create the merge.

I would prefer not to have to use more than a few steps once the database is
created to accomplish the merge, as I will be very busy when I have to
create the forms, on site, for each student.

I would prefer to not use detailed programming. I am an old visual basic
programmer but many of those skills have gone by the wayside as I haven't
used it since VB 5 was updated to 6.

Any suggestions? They will be appreciated.

You are going to have to make use of VBA, but if you take a look at the
article "Combining FormFields and Mail Merge" on the following page of

you will see that we have done most of the work for you already.
