Mail merge issue Office XP

I have a database in Excel. One of the fields is a date which I have
formatted so it reads March, 20, 2003. When I do a mail merge to send
letters this field merges into the document showing the date as 3/20/03.

How do I get Word to display the date in the same format as it is in
Excel??????

HELP!
