Mail Merge Labels from different work sheets

Julia

I am using Excel 2000 and Word 2000.

I created a workbook with three worksheets - each sheet
listing the names and addresses of a different catagory
of volunteers.

I would like to be able to print labels from a specific
worksheet. For example, one time print from the adult
worksheet, the next time from the auxiliary worksheet.

I am not given the option of selecting the specific work
sheet from Word mail merge.

Is it possible to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help

In Word from the Tools menu, select Options and then go to the General tab
and check the "Confirm conversion at Open" box. Then when you attach the
data source, you will be presented with a number of options for the way in
which to connect to the data source. One of them, I forget which, will
allow you to select individual worksheets to use as the data source.

Doug,

Thank you for your reply. I checked the "confirm
conversion at Open" box as you suggested. However, I
could not find any option to conect to the data source
when I tried to merge.

In the merge window, I did see an option for setup, but
it was grayed out.

I must be missing something. Can you advise me further?

Thanks for your time.

I think Doug missed that you have Word 2000, or has
forgotten where the option you need is in that version...

1. Tools/Mail merge

2. In the first step, choose the type of merge document
(labels)

3. In the second step (Get Data), choose the "Open data
source" from the list when you click the button.

4. Navigate to the folder where your Excel file is. Type
*.xls in the field where you enter document names; press
Enter. This should list all the Excel files, so that you
can choose the one you need.

5. Activate the SELECT METHOD checkbox.

6. After you confirm the dialog box (I believe the button
is labelled "Open"), you should get a list of possible
connection methods. Choose ODBC.

7. In the next dialog box you may or may not see the tables
you're looking for. If you did not assign them Range Names,
probably not. So click "Options" and activate all the
checkboxes you find in that dialog box. Now you should see
the individual sheets and you can choose the one you want
to use.

Cindy,

Thank you for so much for your assistance. That worked
beautifully!

The only thing is, after I select my worksheet and
perform the mail merge, I am unable to access my Excel
file that contains the data. When I go to open that
file, I get a message "Cannot access (file name)". It
only happens with this file. If I reboot, then I am able
to open the file.

Can you tell me why this happens and how I can correct
this?

Thanks for yor patience with my questions.

It sounds as if Word has, for some reason, put a lock on the
file. Once the main merge document has been closed, however,
this should be released. Does the problem still persist (not
that I can do much to help if it does, but I'm hoping the
reboot might have nudged whatever caused the problem)?

Cindy,

I tried the mail merge again this morning. The problem
still persits - the file was locked when I tried to open
it.

If nothing can be done about the file locking, at least
rebooting is an option.

Thanks for your help.

Mmmm, but time-consuming. How about if you first open the
Excel file, then set up the mail merge? Is that any better?
