Mail Merge load capacity

I am proposing a letter generation solution based on MS Office 2003. I am trying to determine if others have developed a MS Office based system that handles any where from 1000 - 8000 letters per day in a batch mode. My prototyping of the load is encouraging, but I'd really like to know if others have implemented a production system that handles the load previously stated.
