mail-merge makes faxes illegible

When we use mail merge and then fax the word document
through our fax program we have some client's who can't
read the data in the merged field because the background
highlight in the field is too dark. Is there anyway to
make the highlight around the merged field dissappear?

Does it make any difference if you change Word Tools|Options|View|Field
shading to "Never" before you merge?

(Which version of Word?)

???Normally, I wouldn't expect there to be any "highlight",
unless you've applied the formatting yourself?

Do you mean the gray field shading? Have you tried setting
that to "never" in Tools/Options/View?

This could be related to a problem in Word 2002 where any field highlighting
is printed if you are printing from Normal View (and faxing works via a
printer driver). So you could try either switching off field highlighting in
Tools|Options|View and/or switching to Print Layout before merging.
