Mail merge not importing zip code correctly

I am importing a mailing list from Excel using Office 2003 Pro and Win XP
Pro. When setting up the mailing list in Excel, I formatted the zip code cell
for Zip Code. I live in an area of the country where most zip codes are
preceeded by a zero. Though the leading zero shows in Excel, when I try to
import the list in a Word Mail Merge, it drops the leading zero. How can I
make this work correctly?

I also ran into this problem. It's something about the way that Excel 2003
views the format. I found a few solutions but I took the easy way out - I
fixed each one manually. I didn't have time to mess around with whatever the
suggestions were. I wanted to get that task done right then and there.
(Isn't that a terrible thing for an MVP to admit?)
