mail merge opens another instance of access

when i use a mail merge thru access it opens another
instance of access. i have read about this problem and
have tried the recommended solutions, none of which have
worked. the regedit file quoted by the knowledge base
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0
\Access\Run-Time Options) does not exist on my computer.
there is no text in the application title box. what could
it be?????????
