"mail merge" option multiplying in menu

Peter

In my Tools menu the "Mail Merge..." option is breeding:
it is there at least 20 times and the number keeps growing
and making it harder to use the menu because the list
of "Mail Merge..." options is taking up so much space. It
is located where it is supposed to be, but the "Mail
Merge..." option is repeated many times.

I tried reinstalling Word, which brought me back to a
single "Mail Merge.." line in the menu, but it quickly
started multiplying again.

I don't have this problem with any other option, nor in
any other menu, nor does it show it up in any other Office
program or any other program at all.

I am using Word 2000 and Windows 98 2nd edition.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Peter

The usual cause of this problem is the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for
Word. If you are running Word freestanding (not starting it from the Works
Task Launcher) and do not expect to need to use a Works address book or
database as a data source for a mail merge in Word (or to start a merge from
Works), then you should uninstall the add-in (through Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs), as this is just one of its nasty habits. After you've
uninstalled the add-in, open Tools | Customize and drag all but one of the
Mail Merge entries off the menu.
