Mail Merge Recipients box does not work

I was recently forced to upgrade to Office 2003 from Office 2000 (los
original disk), which has given me no end of problems.
Primarily, the new mail merge simply does not work if I attempt t
filter more than one field in the mail merge recipients dialogue bo
(either by using the drop down menu, or the ‘advanced’ filter option)
The list displays correctly in the box, but when I click OK and retur
to my merge document, the correctly filtered listing appears for
fraction of a second, then flips back to unfiltered (o
partly-filtered) data.
This has been driving me crazy. It worked perfectly well in Offic
2000, and I have about a dozen different mail merge label documents
none of which now work. I have tried rebuilding new documents fro
scratch, but the merge just won’t work with my database.
Now I have an Access database with 1000 addresses which I can’t use o
filter for my magazine subscription labels and Christmas card labels
etc.
Any advice much appreciated.

Software: Windows XP. Word 2003. Database is Access 2003 (I even trie
converting the format from 2000 to 2003 format).

Aha. I think I may have solved my own problem by selecting the ODBC dat
source instead of the default OLE DB source.
After weeks of frustration and finally registering here, I figured i
out within an hour of posting all by myself.

I am having a similar problem with filters in the Recipients box using
an Excel 2003 database. In my case it appears Word is doing something
to add additional query criteria on its own. I set up 2 conditions and
it adds 2 more when I click OK to exit from the Recipients box. The
merge is all wrong.
I am a trainer but not extremely technical. Can you give me a tip about
how I can select "the ODBC data source?"

I found a workaround. If one saves the EXCEL workbook in CSV format,
then the filters work as expected.
