Mail merge text field - how to prevent non breaking spaces

On merging large text fields it would appear that the spaces are protected
and non breaking. So the wholle text can make a document appear cosmetically
awful.
How do I stp this happenning.
The only way seems to be to replace all of the spaces manually in the text
fields after the merge ?
