Mail merge unable to capture data(combination of numbers & alphabe

Currently using MS Office 2003. Mail merge is unable to recognise a data
consisting of both numbers and alphabets, from MS Excel worksheet.
Eg. 1. Suppose to be ...\14A\... or just only the serial number '11A', turns
out to be blank or 0.
Eg. 2. If cell data is ", S"####, both ',' and 'S' will both be removed,
leaving only the '####'. The space before the 'S' is also gone.

From the Tools menu in Word, select Options and then on the General tab,
check the box against "Confirm conversions at open." Then when you connect
to the data source, you will be presented with a dialog giving you a choice
of methods to use to connect to the datasource. Try each one and see if one
of them doesn't give you the correct result.
