Mail Merge using Excel source - converter error

I have a very basic Excel file of addresses I want to use for a mail merge in Word. I have used the file in the past with older versions of Word.

Error: This file needs to be opened by the Excel Workbook text converter....

I get this error with the .xlsx file (tried just .xls file and it did not work at all, different error).

It does convert the file, but it wastes time each time I need to do this simple task.

Updated Word, programs otherwise work fine.

How can I fix this?

Here, I always get this message (it is not presented as an error, just as an
information message) whenever I open an Excel data source of either type in
Word 2008.

However, I do not think Word 2008 is actually doing anything different from
Word 2004, which (as far as I know) also converted the file. It just didn't
tell you that that was what it was doing (and presumably, did it quicker if
you are noticing a difference).

There does not appear to be a way to switch off this message (unchecking the
"Confirm Conversion at Open" preference makes no difference here).
