Mail Merge w\ Word 2000 and Win. XP

D

Dave Frank

I have tried to do a mail merge with Word 2000 and I am
using Windows XP. The problem is that everytime I try to
put the fields on the document, I get a window that says
the program has an error and needs to close. I tried
several times. I actually got to print the letter once
and it worked fine, all nine copies. But when I try
to 'save as' I get the error message and Word must close.
Any help would be appreciated. I am fairly awful with
computers so please use the KIS method to reply.
Thank you.

Hi Dave,

It's always helpful to note down the exact text of an error
message and to type that into your question. That gives
those who understand Word's error messages an idea what
might be causing the problem. Likely causes are either
system conflicts, or a damaged Normal.dot template.

You'll find lots of information in the following set of
Knowledge Base articles. I'm not sure they meet the KISS
standard, but trouble-shooting usually requires one to get
more than the big-toe wet!

The Works add-in is notoriously bug ridden. If you are using Works database,
I would suggest that you export the database to a format that Word can
handle (dbase?) then uninstall the Works add-in. You will also need to clean
up the mess that the crash has left behind:

Thanks Cindy,
for replying to my questions. Here goes on the message I
get. I played with more than one letter and none of them
would let me save the document with the fields entered.
A window pops up and says:"Microsoft Word for Windows has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience."
The Error Signature has:
App Name:winword exe.
app ver: 9.0.0.6926
Mod.Name:wkwdaddn.dll
Mod Ver: 6.0.1919.0 offset0000f09b
I hope that helps you. When I get a chance, I will read
all the information you sent the links to.
Again, thank you for your help.

I was using the mail merge on the word toolbar. And I was
saving it as a Word document, .doc. I tried to save them
as something else, but it wouldn't let me, saying that
the formatt would not be usable.
Thanks for the reply.

It is not the merge document that is the problem, but the data source that
you are merging. I guess from your comment that you have created a data file
in Word 2000 from the merge wizard. This would certainly give you a Word
merge data document. That being the case the Works add-in is of no use to
you. Go to Windows control panel > add and remove programs > uninstall the
Works add-in for Word, then clean up the mess the crash has created using
the information I supplied earlier.
