Mail merge with Foreign Text

Whenever I mail merge into eastern script (japanese for example) the email
comes out as nothing but "???"

I have language packs installed as I can view the original document ok and
can mail merge to a new document, but not straight to email.

Anyone have any ideas? anything would be appreciated.
