Mail merge with social security numbers

I am trying to take social security numbers from an exce3l program and merge them into a word document. I cannot get word to merge with the dashes. any suggestions?

There are no dashes in UK social security numbers and as you have not listed
the format, you are going to have to improvise here - but essentially you
need to use a mask on the field. Use the information relating to zip codes
at
http://www.gmayor.com/formatting_word_fields.htm to give you the basic idea.
