Mail Merge Won't Let Me Import From Outlook

Using Word 2003 and Outlook 2003.

I am attempting to perform a mail merge onto some labels (Rolodex
cards) using contact data from Outlook.

I went into the Tools/options section and made sure that Outlook was
configured as the default mail client. (The box is checked!)

Midway through the mail merge wizard, I continue to get the following
error:

There is no default mail client or the mail client is unable to
fulfill the messaging request., Please run Microsoft Outlook and make
it the default mail client.

Any ideas?
