Mail Merge Word 2003 and document Templates

I am having a problem with mail merge and document templates. If I save
my document as a .dot with the data source attached and then open the
..dot and click mail merge recipients and then click edit I get the
following error:

This operation could not be completed because of a dialog or database
engines failures. Please try again later.

If I re-attach the data source then this will work but when saving and
re-opening the same thing happens.

If I save the document as a .doc it works fine but I need to use .dot
so as to create a new template everytime I open the document.

Any help would be very much appreciated.
