When I have added data to a mail merge template form and saved the new
document with a new name – when I want to open it again is still asks
if

Opening this document will run the following SQL command…

Data from your database will be placed in the document. Do you want
to continue ?

How do I stop this from happening ?

Word 2003

Excel 2003

If it's still a mail merge main document, then you're going to get the
prompt (unless you use the appropriate Registry edit to quash it), but if
you're saying you want to unlink this from the data source and convert it to
an ordinary document, then there is a way to do that. How to do it depends
on what version of Word you're using.

Hi

thanks

I am using word 2003 and Excel 2003 - can you explain how to unlink
the document after the data has been merged.

Many thanks

In Word, display the Mail Merge toolbar. Click the leftmost button (Main
Document Setup) and choose "Normal Word document" in the dialog.

Thanks - when I try that and save the new doc and then close it and re-
open it - I still get the message about

Opening this document will run the following SQL command…
I would just like the new document to be like opening a basic word
doc.

Any ideas

This should not be happening, but I have in the back of my mind that there
is a reason for this if I could just remember it. Is the document based on
Normal.dot? If not, make sure that the template it's based on isn't linked
to a database.

Suggestions in other threads have included renaming Normal.dot and deleting
the Word Data key in the Registry. There is a Registry edit to suppress the
message on mail merge main documents, but that should not be necessary (or
relevant) for a document that is an ordinary Word document (and many users
do report this problem when they open *any* document or even when they open
Word).
