mail merger greyed out

I am using Word 2000 - trying to start a mail merge and
the option is greyed out. Can't get to it. Any ideas?

The simplest possibility is that there must be a document open for the
option to be available, so if there isn't create a new blank one.

To Peter Davis - Just go to Tools / unprotect /
