mail merging from msft. word to excel

when msft. word is main document, and I'm using excel
spreadsheet as data source. It keeps saying word cant
locate or open data source, while it works when I use
other excel spreadsheets as data sources. I cant figure
out why it cant open this particular file.

Which version of Word/Excel? How are you connecting to Excel?

Could the Excel spreadsheet be
a. corrupted (if you can, start a new file and copy all the contents of the
old one)?
b. created by an old version of Excel (ditto)
c. encrypted?
