Mail merging Word and Excel with ZIP codes starting with ZERO

Brenda

I'm trying to merge an Excel spreadsheet into a word
document (mailing labels) I've formatted the column in
the Excel sheet for "special" ZIP CODE format so that the
zeroes will appear in the spreadsheet. However when I do
the merge, if there is a ZIP+4 a ZERO will show up as the
zipcode on the label.. in some cases it looks like a
mathmatical equation. Example 07761-6909 would be 852
and 852 would show as the zip code on the mailing label.
Furthermore, if there was only the standard 5-digit zip
code on the Excel sheet the zero would be missing
entirely and it would show the remaining 4 digits of the
ZIP Code. What am I doing wrong in this application?
This is XP, by the way.
