Mail message count is way off

I've had ongoing problems with Outlook for several year. In addition to
existing problems, I opened my Outlook today to find a Junk Mail folder with
an unread message count of 4,294,967,292 messages. The folder is actually
empty. Can someone tell me how to reset the count to read accurately? I've
rebooted twice with no change. My other folders display realistic counts.

I'm using Outlook 2007.

The counting bug should be gone after applying Service Pack 2 for Office
2007.

To reset the count, place an unread message in the Junk Email folder, right
click on the Junk E-mail folder and choose Mark All As Read. Note that by
default the Junk Email Folder shows a total items count and not an Unread
Items count.

I am actually have a similar problem. I am using Outlook 2003, and
have all the updates. My issue issue is I have junk mail but it's not
an honest count. I have 10000 it says, it shows 100. I am also missing
emails now.

Ouch, Now I am getting the worse of both worlds. The wrong unread numbers are still there, and now some email than comes in as junk but are from new senders end up getting deleted before I can put them in the appropriate file. How do I get back to where I was. I rather have the crazy numbers than loose some valuable mail.

Point of clarification. I am using 2007 and I took the above suggestion, but
haven't received any NEW junk mail yet (give me a few hours!!). So maybe it
will still work. However, I did take some old unread mail that was filed
elsewhere and put it in the junk mail file. It gobbled it up before I could
blink. i.e. a word of caution. Don't test the system this way unless you are
willing to have it end up in the recycle bin

Actually, it looks like just right clicking on junk mail and going to
properties and telling it NOT count total number of items may solve problem.
