Mail Notification on Welcome Screen is not working

OK, guys, I've scoured the newsgroups, and I've scoured the Knowledge Base,
but I can't figure out why the hell my Mail Notification is not showing up
on the Welcome Screen. I'm running XP SP1/all updates, Outlook 2003, IE/OE
6.

Basically, when I'm at the welcome screen, all I see is my name. It's like
the Email notification is turned off.... but it's not. I've played around
with all the settings in TweakUI, turning the mail notification on and off,
using the Repair option, etc. I've even tried manually deleting all the
registry entries under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail to
let Outlook start from scratch, to no avail. When I get a new email, the
count *IS* added to the registry! But, I just can't get the damn thing to
show up on the Welcome screen. As far as I can remember, this has never
worked on my machine. I didn't even know there was such a feature until I
downloaded a Trillian plugin the other day that also utilizes this, and
couldn't get it to work.

Some more info... I have StyleXP installed, and I *WAS* using a custom
welcome screen. I wasn't sure if this is what was causing the problem or
not, so I reverted back to the default Windows Welcome screen... still no
go. I also have Spybot-Search and Destroy, Norton 2003, and AdsGone 2004
installed. This sounds like it might be one of those features that Spybot
would want to disable, but I've looked through all the options, and I can't
find anything to do with the mail notification in Spybot. The other two
(Norton and AdsGone) I wouldn't think would tinker with these settings, but
I'm throwing that out there just in case.

Does anybody have any advice... pretty please. I'd really like this
feature that I've apparently been missing out on for 2 years.

TIA,
Scott Nelson

If you're using TweakUI for Windows XP, one of the Microsoft Powertoys for
Windows XP: Open it, click the + to the left of Logon to expand entries
under that heading, click the Unread Mail entry. Look in the right pane and
see if the option: Show unread mail on Welcome screen has a checkmark to
the left of it. If it doesn't, click to put the checkmark there, then click
the Apply and OK buttons.

S

Scott A. Nelson

Yes, this option is already checked. I just discovered that I'm also
missing the number of programs running on each account as well! I don't
know how this happened, or how to fix it, either.

Hi "Scott A. Nelson"

OK, guys, I've scoured the newsgroups, and I've scoured the Knowledge Base,
but I can't figure out why the hell my Mail Notification is not showing up
on the Welcome Screen. I'm running XP SP1/all updates, Outlook 2003, IE/OE
6.

Following a recent Office 2003 install i again also had mail delivery
reports on the welcome screen, including POP3 account info which as far as i
can tell just doesn't happen in this universe, its since dropped off and
wont respond to any of the known cures

S

Scott A. Nelson

Hmm, so is Office 2003 the culprit?
Did you also lose the number of programs each user has running on the
welcome screen?

For me the Welcome screen is as irritating as a splash screen. If knowing
the number of new email messages is important to you, why not just put a
shortcut for a free email monitor like Magic Mail in your Startup folder. I
like Magic Mail because it shows you all the headers, and you can delete
spam from the mail server BEFORE it's downloaded. You can also Quick View
messages in a Notepad window, which is text only so you can't get a virus.
You can also Quick Reply, which opens a compose window from your default
email program. Why bother with a buggy email notification on the Welcome
screen at all. I've disabled that with TweakUI for Windows XP, and am VERY
pleased with Magic Mail.

http://mmm3.sourceforge.net/

No install necessary. Unzip the files to a folder, fill in the pop server,
user info, save as, then put a shortcut for your save as file name (e.g.
nobody.magic) in your Startup folder. You can also configure how often you
want your mail server checked.

I already have an email monitor in a Trillian plugin... granted not quite as
feature-rich as that one, but... The point of the mail on the startup
screen, is because I never turn my computer off, or log off, but I DO have
Windows switch to the Welcome screen when I'm idle. So, a program such as
this.. or the one I have installed, even, which shows new messages at
startup will not help me. I need to know whether I have new messages when I
Fast User Switch.

There's nothing on that page that I haven't tried. I even tried installing
the program. And, like I said, it's not just the mail counter that's not
working. The running programs counter is no longer working, either.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

This may very well have to do with your using Style XP and using an
alternate Welcome Screen. Another thought would be the optional addin from
Messenger; however, this hampers Hotmail users only.

ResHacker will allow you to open the file logonui.exe. Once open you can
modify the lines for showing running programs, etc from there.

Good luck!

Well, I just downloaded ResHacker and opened up LogonUI.exe. The Mail and
