mail received icon vanished

There is a checkbox that will enable this in Outlook.

Click Tools, Options, Preferences Tab, Email Options,
Advanced Email Options. The box you're looking for is
dead center under the "When New Items Arrive" section and
should be the 3rd checkbox.
