Mail stays in my inbox after I mark it asJunk - emails won't delete

Hi- I'm using Entourage 2004 on an Intel MacBook running OS 10.4, running IMAP mail, and I'm having 3 related problems.

Issue #1
Usually, when I mark a message as junk, it moves into the spam mail folder and I delete it from there. But recently, some emails are getting marked as junk and are staying in my inbox. When I try to move or delete them, nothing happens -- they just stay where they are. I have tried "marking them as not junk" and moving or deleting them, but that doesn't work either. So I can't get rid of the email in my inbox.

Issue #2
It seems that some emails that come in (not necessarily junk ones) come in twice as duplicates. And if I try to delete (or move) them, only one deletes and the other stays in my inbox. Again, I can't get rid of the email in my inbox.

Issue #3
Some regular emails come in just once, and I read them and try to delete, and the email stays in my inbox - it won't delete. Again, the email is stuck in my inbox.

When I log into my webmail, these "ghost" emails (either the duplicates or the ones I moved to trash or marked as junk) do not show up. So it doesn't seem like they're on the email server. Does anyone know what's going on here? How do I get rid of these email? Am I going to have to switch to Mac Mail? I like the integrated solution of mail, a calendar and addressbook in Entourage, but if this can't be solved, I may have to switch.

Anyone experience this at all?

Thanks for your help.

Uh, this is me - through my Google acct. One more thing --

I ran the database utility and it said there were no database
problems. Does anyone know - if I opt to rebuild my database, will
that impact the folders and emails pulled from the server and moved
onto folders on my computer? I don't want to lose those emails.

Anyone experience this at all? What do I do?

Thanks again,
Laine

What happens if you right-click (or Control-click) your Inbox and select
"Repair Message List"?

I ran the database utility and it said there were no database
problems. Does anyone know - if I opt to rebuild my database, will
that impact the folders and emails pulled from the server and moved
onto folders on my computer? I don't want to lose those emails.

I would create a new Identity in Entourage and see if the problems go away.

If the problems go away, then you can either continue to setup the new
Identity, or try rebuilding the old one.

How to manually move your data:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/manual_install.html>

Rebuilding does not pull mail from the server. Emails "On My Computer"
should not be affected, but it can happen. This is why I recommend a
duplicate of your Identity even though the rebuild creates a duplicate.

How to rebuild database:

As with any procedure like rebuild, it¹s a good idea to make a backup prior
to running. Your data should not be erased, but if something fails during
this process data could be lost. To be doubly sure, duplicate your Identity
in the Finder folder prior to the rebuild.

Your Identity is located in Your User's Document folder inside the Microsoft
User Data folder.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/index.html#db1>

Make sure you have enough hard disk space available for twice the size of
your database. As part of the rebuilding process, Entourage creates a second
database file. (Note: your HD also needs breathing room to function)

1. On the Entourage menu, click Turn Off Office Reminders.
2. Quit Messenger and all Microsoft Office applications, including
Entourage.

Hold down the Option key and re-launch the application. In a few seconds,
you¹ll be greeted with the database utility. You can verify and, if
necessary, rebuild the Entourage database by using the Microsoft Database
Utility.

During the rebuild process, the old files are renamed in case for some
reason the rebuild was not successful. After you¹ve rebuilt your database
and checked the application¹s performance, you can delete the old version
from your hard drive. Do NOT throw away these files unless you are satisfied
with the rebuild:

Old files are named:

Main [Backed up date and time will be shown] e.g. Main [Backed up 1.21.2007
13.35]

Thanks Bill and Diane. Bill's suggestion worked, so I really appreciate the help. (I'm a new Mac convert, so don't know all the tricks. I never had a problem like this in my Windows Outlook.) If it starts to happen again, I may try Diane's suggestion.

Thanks again!
