mail to format

When I enter an email address in a cell, it is automatically converted to a
"mail to" format so selecting this cell opens my email application.
I don't want this to happen. How do I turn off the "mail to" feature??

That is probably being caused by "autoformat as I type" or one of its
seven horrid sisters.

Hop into preferences or format->autoformat and turn off everything you
don't need, especially replace.. internet paths with hyperlinks.

As a working principle, bin the whole evil empire of autoformat, then
turn on one or two things you think you might really *really* need -
very gingerly.

Round here, the only thing turned on is smart quotes. In spite of its
hubris encrusted name, it is fairly OK.

I made a mistake and posted my EXCEL problem in the WORD forum.
I cannot find a selection in Excel preferences to stop the automatic "mail to"
when I enter an email address in a cell.

You may get an answer here but, if not, post your question to the Excel
newsgroup: microsoft.public.mac.office.excel

When you do (if you haven't already), title the post something like "Remove
hyperlinks in cells". In fact you should Google the Excel newsgroup first
(www.google.com - Groups - Advanced Groups Search); I'll bet you're not the
first person to ask the question.

Ooops: Things we forgot!! As far as I can tell, there is no way to turn
this off in EXCEL. There is in Word.

I am "pretty certain" this will NOT be fixed in the next version :)

If you hit Command + Z immediately after it has happened, Excel will undo
just the conversion to a hyperlink.

Sorry

J.E. McGimpsey suggested some ways to do it in Excel in one of the other
newsgroups. He has them listed and described on his website:
