Mailbox size affects computer's speed?

I'm running Outlook 2003 on Windows XP _Pro. My Inbox size is 41Mb and Sent
Items is 18 Mb. These files are on my hard drive, not a server.

Hard Drive is not fragmented. Size is 74.5Gb with 65.3 Gb available.

My boss says the number of messages in Outlook is slowing my system down. Is
this true? I have 7500 in Inbox and 5600 in Sent folder.

41 MB is pathetically SMALL! No, it shouldn't be slowing your machine down.
The network traffic may be....

Thank you, Gordon! Our tech responded to your & my post with:

"One of the issues is still going to be that you have to go in and archive
your mailbox and clean up some of the emails. I will schedule some time to
come up and take a look at it. But, you can't just keep saving every sent
item and every email in the actual inbox."

Is this so?

From a company mail policy point of view; this can be true. For instance,
they could have a mailbox limit of 75MB so you are reaching the limit now.
It could also be that they archive everything older than a certain date or
from completed projects. In that case; you need to remove those emails as
well.

From a technical point of view; it shouldn't be an issue for most
configurations. The hardware specifics of your machine and additional
software installed on your machine (any Outlook addins?) could allow us to
give a more specific answer.
