Mailmerged text turns red

Any ideas why mailmerged text turns red on some mailmerged documents
in Word X, and refuses all commands to try to change it back to black?

Those documents that turn red probably have been protected for Track
Changes. From the Tools menu select Track Changes, then Accept or Reject
Changes. Here you can either accept or reject changes. Once you have done
that, the red text should turn to black.
