Main search doesnt work

Bryson Goodwin

I am running a new laptop with Windows 7, 64 bit and Outlook 2007.

It was a big decision because I currently manage 6400 clients through
outlook and i was very hesitant and concerned to transfer data.

So Windows 7 handled the transfer (easy transfer cable/program) and all my
data seemed to migrate over. The various contact folders appear and are
searchable from within their individual folders.

Problem is, I cant do a main search and when I try to configure to force the
search some fields are grayed out. When I did a search Microsoft told me to
make some changes to indexing but it didnt work and indexing seems to see the
corect number of items???. I really dont understand whats going on and with
6400 clients it is making things very time heavy. A further note, my
blackberry seems to be taking the changes from the folders as i make them
with sync. Any ideas? should I reinstall outlook? For the ease of future
posts, Consider my comp skills to be limited to that of my 80 year old grama.
Include all steps and substeps. just easier for me and any future people who
experience this...quirk?

As has been posted here many times, you must never use Windows Easy Transfer
to transfer Outlook data. It creates a corrupt profile that has none of the
transports you need for doing Contact lookup.
You must first create a new profile:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829918&Product=out2003
Then you must use a supported method for transferring your data. Take a look
at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx
Note that some of the information on the Microsoft page is outdated and
contains errors, particularly when applied to Outlook 2003 or 2007.
Specifically:
1. Ignore any advice to copy your PST file to Outlook's default location to
connect it to your profile. Doing so will often corrupt your Outlook
profile. Copy it
anywhere BUT the default location and then open it within your Outlook
profile.
2. Ignore any advice that tells you to use export or import to transfer
Outlook data. That has never been sound advice, but the process has become
too deeply flawed to be of any use.

Finally, you must make sure you configure the Outlook Address Book Service
to use your transferred data:
