Maintain References but break up document

I'm working on a proposal that was originanlly created as a 170-page,
5-section document that I now need to break up into individual files for each
section. I have 35 tables and 5 figures, all referenced in the text so that
they automatically update when changed.

Is there a way to make my 5 separate documents but maintain the referencing
without having to redo them all?

Thanks,
Eloise

You can lock the fields. Select them and then press Ctrl+F11. This prevents
them from updating (until you unlock them with Ctrl+Shift+F11).

But why do you want to split the file? Word can handle large files, and it
will be more convenient to keep all the sections together.

Have to split into separate files because our customer requested that...

It turns out that when I just copied and pasted into a blank document, the
references stayed. The CTRL + F11 looks like it'll be useful for the TOC,
though. Thanks!

Well, that is certainly a good reason... :)

Well, this depends on how you pasted. If you pasted in Word format (the
default), the fields will be pasted with the text. This means they can still
be updated. On the other hand, if you pasted as plain text, the field results
were converted to static text.
