maintaing cross-reference numbering

I have added numbering to my document, as it contains many
figures pasted from the clipboard. However, Word
doesn't maintain the reference if I insert numbering into
the document. For example, suppose I have ten pictures
numbered throughout a document. I number them with the
auto-number feature (insert - field - autonum) Suppose
later I add two pictures somewhere in the middle of the
document. I can insert new numbers and the remainder of
the numbering changes, as it should. However, in the
document's text, where it may say, see Figure 8, Figure 8
is now Figure 10, but the text (or rather the cross-
reference) doesn't change. Can Word do this? That way,
if I insert pictures, the reference to those picture
numbers will change throughout the text.

Thanks in advance! (hope this post didn't duplicate)

Howard,

Word can do this, but I recommend abandoning AUTONUM.

You can use Insert>Caption to number your pictures. Then
use Insert>Cross Reference in you text to create cross
references to the numbered figures, captions, diagrams,
etc.

Thanks Greg, that works much better. The formatting is
not the way I want it, but I'll look for default fonts for
captions. As long as I hit f9 to update the captions, I
can insert and delete captions, and the cross-referencing
within the doc works fine.

This is going to save me much time when updating my
manuals. (Got to work on TOC next month).
