maintaining cell formating

I select a column and format it for dates (3/4/08). All dates I type are in that format. I save the file and close it. When I reopen it the old data is in the correct format but any new date defaults to (3-March). Why won't it maintain the cell format? Or better yet, how do I get it to maintain the saved format?

What version of XL?

What version of OS X?

How are you formatting the column for dates? Are you using a built-in
format or a custom format?

Do dates entered in cells with General format also display as d-mmmm?

Is it *only* that file, or does it happen in new files as well?

FWIW, I can't reproduce this in either XL04 or XL08 in OS X 10.5.1
