Major problem in Outlook Express 6 associated with Windows update

I have a major problem that that seem to be associated with the latest
Windows update. Can someone help?

(1) I am using Win XP-Home Edition (running Outlook Express 6). Last night,
I installed new updates (responding to the automatic install icon in my task
bar that informed me that updates were available -- the little gold shield).
This morning, almost all of my newsgroups were adversely affected. I had a
great many threads marked in a number of NGs to watch. They were configured
so that these threads showed in red and were at the top of the list when I
opened a NG. Everything worked perfectly last night *before* installing the
updates. This morning, as soon as I open any NG that showed in red, *all*
marked messages suddenly disappeared from the screen. Moreover, I can't
even search for some of them manually because some are too old (not really
old in age, but with active NGs there are too many messages for the maximum
setting that Outlook will permit). With some NGs, as soon as I clicked on a
message -- in this case, new messages that had never been read -- a line
appeared through them along with the message that this message "could no
longer be retrieved."

What is going on? How can I prevent this, and is there any way to get
Outlook to download older messages?

If I have posted to the wrong MS group, I will appreciate it if someone will
direct me to the correct one.

Thanks,
MaryL
