Major Problem with Word 2007 Hyphenation

On my computer, Word 2007 does not hyphenate words properly. For example, the
word "happenstance." The built-in dictionary shows correctly that the word
should be divided happen-stance, but Word 2007 divides it as follows:
happens-tance. About half the words in each file are improperly hyphenated.
The default language setting for the document is set to American English. I
use this program to create a published newsletter, and I desperately need a
solution. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, sorry I don't have an answer for this, but I noticed that you haven't had
a reply in 2 weeks, which makes me feel bad. These groups generally work
very well with problems like this. If you create a simple .doc file, like a
letter with narrow margins to force hyphenation often, does this still
happen? If you wanted to experiment with something like this, I would be
happy to bring a small file you create into my installation of Word 2007 to
see if it does the same thing. I have some trouble with porting Word 2003
..doc files into Word 2007, but hyphenation seems to work okay.

Well, well, well. I just came across the very same thing in a document I'm
working on. Lo and behold, Word is hyphenating various words where the
dictionary says not to. It seems to happen with only certain words, and I've
just been putting in manual, optional hyphens to fix these few cases. MS
ought to look into this!

Jim,
Sorry I'm so slow to respond. I've been on the road a good bit the past
few weeks, and haven't been able to keep up with this site. Thank you so
much for taking the time to respond. Yes, you are absolutely right. The
problem is only with certain words. I use Word 2007 to edit and layout my
state's historical journal and newsletter, and this is a MAJOR problem for
us. I sincerely hope that MS looks into this problem and corrects it ASAP,
because, as things stand now, we have to verify the hyphenation of every word
