Major trouble with Office XP

I'm having major problems with Office XP, updated to SP3. When I use any
Office program (Excel, Word, etc.) when I first start my computer, everything
runs fine. The longer I keep my computer on, the slower the programs start to
function. I mostly use Word, but when my computer is on for a while, it takes
forever to save, open, format fonts, format paragraphs, everything. I see my
CPU usage shooting up to 50-100%. I don't understand what's going on. I have
a dual core 2.6GHz processor and 2GB ram and I'm having such horrible
performance issues that I can't resolve. Anyone have any ideas what might be
going on? I've tried reinstalling but it doesn't help.

I've scanned my computer many times with updated virus definitions using
Norton AntiVirus. As for malware apps, can you suggest some for me? Although
I doubt this because, I only started experiencing this problem after I
reformatted my hard drive. Even trying multiple times to format my hard
drive, still get the same problem. Maybe it's a hardware issue? I only
experience these problems with Microsoft Office, though.

You formatted your HD & reinstalled winxp did you also install chipset &
other drivers from manufacturers, or rely on winupdate? - a bad idea.
And if you turn off the Norton integration with Office, does this help -
note, you may have to completely uninstall Norton in order to completely
remove its hooks into office.
