Major Unit Automatic

I'm trying to get some information about the algorithm Excel uses to
determine the Major Unit value on a scatter chart (either x or y) when
Auto is selected.

I know I can explicity set these directly or through code, but I would
rather not.

Microsoft kindly supply an article about how this is used to determine
min and max values and how the major unit value is used, but nothing
about how the Major Unit is actually determined. Once again thanks to
Microsoft for providing close but irrelevant help. ;-)

If anyone can help it would be great.
