Make Available Offline - Grayed Out

R

Rob

All, How can I change the Group Policy, that allows the user to select a file
and uncheck, "Make Available Offline". Right, now if my users go into their
my documents folder, and select a file, such as a PST file, the option is
grayed out.

The reason why we want to uncheck that, is because the PST file always gives
the user an error when their computer synchronizes, when they log off.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Where is the .pst file located? It should be local to users, not on a
network drive.

..pst files on a network drive are not supported, cause errors such as the
one you see, and can corrupt the .pst file beyond repair.

They are in the users My Documents Folder, which has folder redirection
enabled. We have the PST files in their my documents folder so they are
backed up. If not, users store them locally, then if their laptop fails,
then they loose their data.

Having had first-hand experience of trying to use a pst file as an off-line
file with the original stored on a network drive - DO NOT DO IT. You will
VERY quickly get LOTS AND LOTS of corrupted pst files.
Your best bet is to use the Personal Folders Backup utility from MS that
will make a copy to a Network location when the User closes Outlook.

So, it sounds like you are using roaming profiles?

na, we aren't using roaming profiles. ok, besides the pst file, if I right
click on any other file, weather it is excel, word, a folder, the "make
available offline" is checked, but grayed out. How can I set the GP, so that
the "make available offline" is not grayed out?

Gordon, besides the users home directory that is their my documents folder
redirected to a network share (which in return is synchronized), where are
you storing the PST file that is created from the MS PST Backup Utility.

If we used this Util and the user stores the fild in their my documents,
were back to the problem of the PST Syncrhonization error message.

Thanks!

You can store it anywhere you decide. It's up to you.......

If we used this Util and the user stores the fild in their my documents,
were back to the problem of the PST Syncrhonization error message.

The pst file that is used as the default message delivery location needs to
be in a folder on the local HDD to minimize any corruption risk. If you put
it in a manually-created folder that actually resides on the HDD outside of
the "My Documents" scenario, then you'll be OK. Unless I have mis-understood
what you are doing....
