Make Outlook Default Newgroup Reader

J

When the "News" Icon is pressed on the toolbar a different program opens
(Barca Pro2). How do I make Outlook the default Newsgroup Reader? I am
using Outlook 2007 and Vista 2007

I tried changing the default programs in Vista but did not work.

Many Thanks.

Outlook is not a newsreader. it uses OE (Windows XP) or Windows Mail
(Vista).

Which I never understood why...
Why outlook is consistently being kept away from newsgroup support?

Outlook is not yer normal run-of-the-mill email client. It's used
mostly in corporate environments... and those places aren't exactly
playgrounds, or the powers that be in those environments would prefer
that they not be.

If it is not possible to install outlook express in corporations,
it should then be possible for corporations to not to install the newsgroup
feature of outlook,
if it was there.

Outlook is not OE and the modules are not optional. There are much better
news clients available.

When you get to be the CEO of Microsoft, maybe you can enact that
change.

You are correct. I see that it is Windows Mail that contains the
newsreader, not Outlook. Outlook offers the tool button that will call up
the newsreader.
In my case, pressing the button causes a different program other than
Windows Mail to open. I might try seeing what happens if I remove Barca Pro
from the operating system (I am using Outlook presently but might need Barca
to read older email messages from when I was using it before). I suppose
making Windows Mail the default mail program would not help matters.

Go into Internet options (IE, Tools, Options or Control panel) - set the new
reader on the programs tab.

Please include the post to which you are replying to so others know what you
are talking about as this is not a forum where all messages are threaded -
its a newsgroup and we all prefer different views.

Outlook sucks as a newsreader - if you don't believe me, try the newsreader
addins and you'll discover many of the limitations of using a mapi client
for NNTP. http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/news.htm

As bad as OE (and its incarnations of Vista Mail and Live Mail) are, they
are better newsreaders than outlook ever would be and if those don't suit,
alternate browsers include newsreaders, or you can use standalones like
Agent, xananews, xnews, gravity and many, many others. I like xananews the
best of all non-MS clients, but stopped using it when beta testing as I
formatted too often - it was faster to use OE than to reinstall the
software.

SOrry to be so late to this thread, but I have a question: Is it possible to
connect to the Microsoft Newsgroups, via OE, and if so, how does one
configure OE to do so (note, I am inside my company's firewall, if that makes
any diff).

use the server name msnews.microsoft.com and all the default settings. No
username or password is required. If the company blocks NNTP port 119, it
won't work.

Ok...I guess what I had set up was right...my company must be blocking 119.
Oh well....I will just log in here :)

Not unfortunate if that company has decided its workers should spend time on company business and not posting to alt.binaries.sex.gerbils.

Those who do want their staff to have NNTP access use Exchange 2003 or earlier to gateway NNTP. Or they allow web access to news groups.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

many companies do block the nntp port unfortunately.
