make table field types

I have a "totals query" that uses the DSUM function in
many fields. When I use this query to make a new table,
the calculated fields turn into text fields (instead of
number fields) in my new table. Does anyone know why?

I have tried using the field properties in the query to
set the calculated fields to fixed, standard, and general
numbers but when I RUN I still get text fields in the new
table. The decimal places are out of control!! Since they
are text fields I cannot control decimals in the reports
based on the table.

I tend to avoid Make-Table Query since you rely on
Access / JET to work out the Field Type/Size.

I normally set up/design the structure of the destination
Table first with the Field Type/Size I want and then use
an Append Query to insert Records into my destination
Table.
