Make toolbars in Outlook 2003 auto-arrange or stay as I left them

T

In Outlook 2003, I have to re-arrange the toolbars everytime I start the
program. Why can't the toolbars either (a) stay as I left them, or (b)
auto-arrange? Thank you.

Are they all Outlook-created toolbars or are some of them from third-party
addins? The outcmd.dat file holds Outlook toolbar customizations and it
often becomes corrupted, which causes things to disappear or change -- the
only way to fix it is to delete or rename the file (with Outlook closed) and
let Outlook recreate the default toolbars, which should then behave better.
Unfortunately you have lost any customizations by doing so. It's good to
have a backup of a working outcmd.dat file in case you want to restore it
later.

Third-party toolbars are a different matter. The developers of those
products control where the toolbars are placed. Some may allow you to move
or change them, but others want to stick in the place they originally showed
up...so if you move them during an Outlook session, they'll have moved back
next session. Annoying, but it's something you'd have to take up with the
third-party companies.

They are all Microsoft toolbars. The toolbars open are Standard, Advanced,
Wed and Business Contact Manager. I arrange the four toolbars to fit on two
lines, but the last one keeps going back to a third line. Thoughts?

It could be BCM causing this behavior -- I don't use BCM so I'm not sure. If
you don't get any more replies to this thread you might try posting in the
BCM newsgroup and ask if that is standard behavior for that toolbar.

I am suffering from a similar problem. My toolbars are rearranged,
scattered, each time I send a new email. I take the time to arrange them and
when I send the next email they have moved again. (I am strickly talking
about the toolbars in the send window) When I right click near the toolbars,
the customize icon is grayed out. Is this normal? I do have the adobe
toolbar in with these, but have had no problems until recently.

Have you tried the suggestion I originally posted to Tom about the outcmd.dat
file?

Yes, I tried that as soon as I read your message. I deleted that file,
removed it from the recycling bin - but when I started Outlook back up it was
still messed up. I even took off the Adobe toolbar - which changed nothing.

I think I saw a thread from you in another newsgroup where someone else was
helping you with this -- I'll try to find that thread and see if I can add
anything there.

I looked at the other thread in microsoft.public.outlook.general but I think
I'd best stay in this one :) Try running a Detect and Repair operation
from Outlook's Help menu. Make sure you have your installation CD handy.
Perhaps that will fix the toolbar issue.
