Make Word Look Like on PC....

Hello All:

I work on a PC at work and a Macbook at home and I was wondering if there was a way to change the style of the mac 2004 word so that it takes up the whole screen like the pc one does?

I know it sounds a bit trite but, to see the background desktop with word on my mac is a bit distracting at times.

Is there a way to make this happen?

The Mac OS does not work the same way Windows does but you can still resize
the Word window the same as any other window on the Mac. Stretch it, use the
Max/Restore button... But these are OS X features & have nothing
specifically to do with Word or Office. Have a look in Mac Help on the
topic: Moving and resizing windows & related subjects.

For new blank documents: open your Normal template (use Spotlight to find
it), drag the bottom-right corner so that the document fills the screen, hit
the spacebar once and the delete key once (to give Word something to save)
then Command-s to save. All new blank documents will open thus.

Pre-existing documents will open at the same size as they were last
displayed.

Since you are using Word 2004 you could devise a macro that would set the
document size to fill your screen; post back if you want more information on
that.

Thanks Guys for all your help with this.

Tried both of your ideas and I will just have to get used to the mac way of doing things.

It is a small thing to deal with for a much better computer. :)

Thanks again,

Paul

Good to hear, Paul!

If it's any consolation, the Mac was there first in almost all these GUI
matters before Microsoft, er, drifted into
similar-but-a-bit-different-after-the-lawyers-had-thought-about-it
alternatives!

There are some good books around for "switchers" -- O'Reilly publishers have
one if I recall correctly.

Keep coming back -- we're glad to help.

Cheers,

Clive

One option I did neglect to mention - In Word's Window menu use the Zoom
Window command.

We get so quickly set in our ways. I migrated from WordPerfect 3.5 (Mac)
to Word and spent a lot of time trying to get Word to behave more like
WP - but some things it just doesn't do. Some things it does better.
Some things it does worse.

Same thing with migrating from Windows to Mac OS.

Hi,

At one time there was a setting for MacOS that let you have a single
application grab the entire screen at a time. The setting is gone from
preferences, but it wouldn't surprise me if there might be a UNIX
command that would toggle it.

I looked around, but didn't find anything promising - mostly because
there is a sea of customization options out there and I didn't spot it.

Try checking VersionTracker and posting the question to MacOS forums.

Hi again,

I tried searching for just the keyword "window" because I could not
think of an easy set of keywords for this.

In technical terms you want each application to have the entire screen
so that other applications are not visible at the same time.

I couldn't figure out a good search for that, which is why I suggested
that you post your question in a MacOS newsgroup. It's not really a
Microsoft Office topic.
