Making a box in Word

Could anyone let me know how to make a little box in Word, that I can use on
a form for people to tick...

I've tried using Format Text Box, but can't get this to line up with the
words on a line, it will only be 1/2 between the lines.

Any suggestions appreciated.

thanks

Specifically....

I'm able to make the format text box.. but can't line it up with the text,
even when I space out the lines 1.5pt.

Is there any way that I can line up this text box with the text?

Cheers

Hi Bloke,

If this form is going to be printed out and distributed on paper, then what
you're doing will work okay (although I would probably open the Drawing
Toolbar and use an AutoShape or draw a box, myself). To position the box
exactly where you want it, you have to do two things: 1) Open the Drawing
Toolbar, click on the Draw icon (the top one), then on Grid, and uncheck
"Snap to grid." (If you'll be doing much of this, you'll want to change
this to a default in your Normal template.) 2) Select the box, go to
Format> Text Box (or Object or AutoShape, depending on what it is), click
the Layout Tab and then change the Wrapping Style to Square or Tight. Now
you'll be able to move the box wherever you want it using the mouse or the
arrow keys.

However ... If you're creating a form for use on the computer/web, there are
better ways to do this. Start with a search for "forms" in Word's help and
also look over the articles on the "Tables, Fields, Forms" tab at this site:

First, this is probably a job for a drawing object as opposed to a text
box. Although you can work with the text box, there is really no
reason to since the box is not containing any text. On the other hand,
each you wanted people to enter text into the box then you would use
the text box as opposed to a drawing object. The instructions below
will work for either a drawn object (square) or a text box.

Open a new blank document and then show the drawing tool bar and
turn on Show All (cmnd-8). Now click on the square tool and make a
small square near the left margin. Adjusts the properties of the square
by using the Format/Autoshape layout and size tabs. Layout should be
set to "in front of text" and sizes should be specified to whatever size
you want.

There are two ways to work with this drawing object in your document.
One way is to set up a 2 column table and size the left column narrow
enough to contain the square. Then *copy and paste* the square into
the cells in the table. Vertical alignment is assured as long as the
margins are set the same for each cell in the table. Then put your text
in the right column.

The other way is to forget the table and simply place the squares at the
beginning of each paragraph of your text. This approach would be
necessary if the text ran more than one line and you wanted the second
line to line up with the left margin of the document. Set up a tab mark
about half an inch to the right of the square and then tab over to begin
your text. This approach will also assure that your boxes are vertically
aligned.

Hope this helps!

Go to View>Toolbars and enable the Forms toolbar.

What you want is a "check box" form field. For more information, search for
the Help topic " Form fields in forms".

To adjust the check box to your liking, double-click it.

Thanks for the info...

I'm able to put the boxes where I want.. but can't get them to line up ..
and am unable to put them in the second column (I've split the Word document
into two columns) for some reason.. they won't stay there.

There was another way I put tick boxes in a Word document, but can't
remember.

Can you think of another way.. or do you know how I can get the boxes to
stay in the 2nd column..

Many thanks for the help!
