I can create a custom fill pattern that itself contains shapes with
gradient fills, and so long as the gradients go from black to white it
seems to work nicely when applied to a shape - it uses the fill
colours I specify for the shape. However, the behaviour seems a little
erratic. Sometimes shapes in the fill pattern will be unexpectedly
truncated, or vanish altogether. Shapes that are positioned a distance
from the origin seem to be more likely to be affected. This doesn't
happen if I use a solid fill on them.
I also find I get unexpected effects if I expand a gradient-filled
shape outside of the custom fill's page area. For example, with a
custom fill page of 200mmx40mm, I create a rectangle and a square,
both filled from black at the top to white at the bottom. The
rectangle fills the page and extends downward 40mm. (left:0mm,right:
200mm,bottom:-40mm,top:40mm) The square has 40mm sides and is sitting
at the left end of the page, overlapping the rectangle. (left:
0mm,right:40mm,bottom:0mm,top:40mm) When editing the custom fill the
rectangle is black at the top of the page and medium grey at the point
it overlaps the bottom of the page. The square is black at the top of
the page and white at the bottom. When the fill is applied to a shape
(assume that the shape has the same 5:1 aspect ratio for now), the
first rectangle is medium grey at the top and white at the bottom - it
has changed! The square remains black at the top and white at the
bottom.
Are gradient fills supposed to work inside custom fills at all? If so,
is there some kind of logic to their behaviour?
