Making a pricelist from a datafile

T

Thomas

Hi,

I have (alot of) trouble getting started on a spreadsheet. I am fairl
new to Excel. Maybe somenone here can help me...

Background:

I am trying to create a spreadsheet that will contain price-informatio
about different products. The information about the products lies i
sheet3 of my workbook. The data has been pulled out of a database, an
all the information about a product lies in the same row. That means
"next row, different product".
The "datasheet" has about 60 columns, and 2500 rows.
The pricelist I am creating should contain about 10 of these columns
but not all the rows(products).

Problem:

Just about everything. The pricelist should be dynamic. By that I mea
that you are not supposed to punch in any numbers, but when yo
renew/update the datafile in sheet3 from the database,
the pricelist should automaticly change. And if you get a new product
with a product-catogory-nr. 400, this will be added to the pricelis
together with the products in the same catogory.

I would be very happy for any kind of help to get started :

Dear Thomas

It is not quite clear from your message how your datafile
is getting into excel, so I am assuming that it is
imported from something like an exported csv file. It may
be that you are able to link directly to your database via
excel and thus having a "live" data set with which to
work. In case you do not know how to do this, open a new
workbook, select the data menu, and from that select Get
External Data. Thereafter select New Database Query. this
will bring up a window with the databases to which you can
connect. If the database that you need to connect to is in
the list select it, and this will in turn open MS Query.
from here you can select the relevant database table, and
which fields from the table that you wish to return to
excel. Once the data has been returned to excel, all you
need to do to update the data is to right mouse click
anywhere in the data set and select refresh data - this
may help you on the right track to what you are trying to
achieve
