Yes, I can drag a contact to the calendar. But what I expect is the
calendar
to show the contact name without me typing it in - that is, I would think
it
is logical for me to simply type "meeting" and have the calendar display
"Joe
Smith" as the contact for whom the meeting is with, and that I wouldn't
have
to type "meeting with Joe Smith" in order for the calendar to display that
essential information. I know I can open the appointment to see that
information, but I don't think I should have to - what's the point of
linking
the contact if the name doesn't show?
Maybe I'm being unreasonable but this seems like a fairly basic feature.

It's Outlook 2007.
I don't see "New appointment" under Actions.
Sorry, but I don't understand the "contact linking field" remark.
Can't you usimply drag a contact to the Calendar to create a meeting
request?
In Outlook 2003 and earlier, at the bottom of the calendar form was a
field labeled "Contacts" into which you could enter the names of
contacts. That would link the event to the contacts. That's the
"contact linking" field. In Outlook 2007, that field isn't displayed by
default. You need to enable it in Tools>Options>Contact Options.
