Making an Index for Multiple Documents and Marking the items first

I have to make an index for a multi-document doc. 2007. What are the steps
and easy way to do this? I have a list of about 30 items that should be
indexed. Going through each document and "marking" each one is
time-consuming. Is there a programming way to do this?
