Making changes to the Normal template

I wonder if anyone can help me. Every time I open a Word document (with the
default title Document1) I have to change the page setup. Is there a way I
can change and save the page setup for the Normal template so that it
defaults to the right paper size for me when opening a new Word document? I
know how to change the page set up, but the problem is, I can't save any
changes made to the Normal template.

Alternatively, how can I change the properties so that when I open Word it
picks up a new template in stead of the Normal template?
